Character Background: (Giving brief descriptions of the characters in this show is rather difficult, my apologies!)
Snow White (in the Enchanted Forest) is a truly gentle, kindhearted, compassionate individual with nothing but the good of others in mind. As a young girl, her mother instilled this in her. She is also very affectionate and loyal and trusts without thinking. This trust was evident when she innocently broke a childhood promise that she made to Queen Regina, putting total faith in the fact that Regina’s mother Cora would understand her daughter’s dilemma and pardon her at once. This was not the case, and terrible occurrences ensued…causing an infuriated Regina to seek vengeance on Snow. Before long, Snow found herself an outlaw on the run…wanted for “crimes” against the Evil Queen, her stepmother, who wanted nothing more than to revel in her demise. Snow’s demeanor inevitably changed to accommodate the new lifestyle which was forced upon her. As a result of the many adversaries that she faced and narrowly escaped while running, it became much harder for her to trust those with whom she was unfamiliar. She had to consider the fact that each new face was a possible threat, but despite this, she still saw the good in people. Very unlike her, she began stealing in order to scrape by. She lived a lonely life with no companionship until she stumbled across Red Riding Hood in a small village (who caught her in the act, trying to steal eggs from her chicken coup). Red was not angered by this, but rather concerned for Snow, and offered that Snow stay with her and her Granny. Because of her trust issues, she accepted this kind gesture, but politely refused to disclose her true identity to Red. Though it took Snow some time to build up her trust, the two began to form a strong bond, swiftly becoming best friends. During the time that Snow was staying with Red and her Granny, she was told of a wolf that terrorized the village and its inhabitants. Soon, but tragically too late, Snow found out that Red was the Wolf that had been terrorizing the village. When Red’s true love, and eventually her mother both tragically died, Snow stayed faithfully by her friend’s side, and there she would stay no matter what. The loyalty and support that she showed for her friend during good times and bad was unmatchable. It became apparent at this point that when Snow formed a true bond, that bond wasn’t likely to be broken.
Though she now had a great friend and a happier outlook, that didn’t change the fact that she was still a wanted woman…still on the run. After spending more and more time with Red about the forest, she seemed toughen up quite a bit. By this time, she was rather a shell of the soft, gentle girl that she once was. She had become bolder and more outspoken…a warrior of sorts. That gentleness was still within her- just deeply buried having been repressed for so long. Realizing that she couldn’t live on the run forever, she desperately decided to go further with her thievery, stealing valuables from the carriages of the Evil Queen in order to save up enough to leave the kingdom behind and start a new life somewhere far from the Queen and her wrath. One day while out in the forest, Snow stole a small bag from a carriage. While attempting to flee the scene, she was pursued by Prince James who was soon revealed to be the owner of the bag which contained something of great value to him. She escaped him the first time, but he later captured her again, and upon this unconventional meeting she sarcastically dubbed him "Charming" because it simply "suited him." At first, she treated him as she would have any other person that she might have met in the forest- with great caution and next to no trust. He then revealed to her that what she stole from him was his mother’s wedding ring, and demanded that she give it back to him or else he would turn her over to the Evil Queen. Though she had already sold it, she reluctantly agreed, and they set out to retrieve it.
Snow’s rough life had also hardened her heart to love. She’d slowly lost her childlike faith in true love over the course of the longs months…years that she’d been without it. Despite the fact that it had been tainted and forcibly closed off for so long, that side of her began to shine through as the long journey caused the two to unexpectedly fall in love. Though each had secretly developed feelings for the other, they parted ways. Charming was soon to be wed to another.
Snow had unmatchable willpower, but the one time that sheer willpower failed her was when she and Charming were separated. He would marry Princess Abigail, and she would just have to accept that. She couldn’t stand the thought of having to live without him…thoughts of him wouldn’t leave her mind. Her shell finally cracked, and she negotiated a potion from Rumplestiltskin that would make her forget all about her love for him. After holding herself back for as long as she could, Snow finally drank this potion and it completely distorted her mind, filling her with hate and bitterness. This potion not only made her forget her love for Charming but it emptied her mind of all love. She then immediately set out to kill the queen.
Charming eventually found her and stopped her from following through with her deadly plot. After one failed attempt, he brought back her love with a kiss. They were again torn apart immediately afterward by King George’s men.
As an ultimate result of Snow and Charming's unrequited love, Queen Regina and King George banded together against them. Regina enacted a sleeping curse on Snow with an enchanted apple. Charming traversed the land in search of her. When he finally found her, her lifeless body being mourned over by the seven dwarfs, he realized that he was far too late. Absolutely devastated, he gave her one final kiss. To his surprise, his kiss....true love's kiss...broke the curse and Snow was awakened. They were soon married and expecting a child (Emma). All was well until the curse was enacted.
---
Mary Margaret Blanchard (Snow White's cursed counterpart) is like Snow White in some ways, but entirely different in others. Mary Margaret has a kind, gentle disposition and is always willing to lend a hand to someone in need. She is compassionate as well...regularly volunteering at Storybrooke’s local hospital. She is also quite hospitable, offering Emma Swan (her daughter, in retrospect) a place to stay immediately after finding out that she has nowhere to go upon her arrival in Storybrooke. Like Snow, Mary Margaret also forms very strong bonds. (Much like the one that she eventually forms with Emma- A unique kind of friendship that would stand the test of time.) Oddly enough, her friendship with Ruby isn’t more than the occasional hello and goodbye whilst they are cursed in Storybrooke. I’d suppose that this is just part of the curse “destroying everyone’s happiness” and taking away “everything that they love.”
Whereas Snow is rather outspoken and bold in her approaches, Mary Margaret is much more reserved and cautious. She is always friendly, but extremely cautious when it comes to the prospect of things such as romantic involvements for fear of possible heartbreak. A spark is ignited in her that slightly changes this upon the awakening of David Nolan (Prince Charming’s cursed counterpart) from a coma. They are drawn to each other for reasons that neither can understand. Unfortunately, David awakes to a wife (Kathryn Nolan/Princess Abigail’s cursed counterpart) that he has no memory of, and Mary Margaret, whom he is mysteriously and unexplainably drawn to. Confusion is inevitable. Eventually, Mary Margaret is accused of and arrested for a terrible crime against Kathryn that she did not commit. The entire town (with the exception of Emma and Henry) rises up against her. The way that she handles this situation shows that she is much weaker than Snow in more ways than one. She’s definitely not as much of a “fighter.” When compared with Snow, she has obvious difficulties coping with false accusations. Instead of trying to stick it out, she quickly has enough of the situation and attempts to flee the city. She is soon stopped by a very disgruntled Emma, who confesses that she can’t lose her only “family.” Later Mary Margaret’s name is cleared, and she and David have a falling out. He didn’t believe her claims of innocence, and she simply couldn’t forgive him for such “betrayal.”
The one notable time when Mary Margaret really stood up and spoke her mind was when Emma tried to leave Storybrooke with Henry. She criticized Emma for leaving because Emma had herself insisted on the two sticking together, because they were "like family." She told her that if she really wanted what was best for Henry, she would start acting like a responsible mother and figure it out.
---
After the curse is broken, however, she becomes much more like her old self- almost a mixture of both personalities, for she is essentially both, now that she has regained her memories. The tougher side of Mary Margaret that had been stifled for so long really comes out when she and Emma are trapped back in their world after slipping through a portal created by the Jefferson’s (The Mad Hatter’s) hat. The entire time that she’s trapped- away from David, Henry, and the rest of Storybrooke, Mary Margaret fights to protect her daughter. (Whether Emma likes it/feels like she needs it or not.) Despite Emma’s independent tendencies, the mother-daughter bond between the two strengthens during this ordeal. After a long struggle, they finally arrive back in Storybrooke. Mary Margaret wakes David from his curse with True Love’s Kiss. (He had himself cursed because he wanted to see if he could connect with Mary Margaret through the nightmares that are a direct effect of the sleeping curse itself. They were able to talk, but she couldn’t bring him out of the curse at the time because they were in different worlds.)
Soon, Mary Margaret begins to contemplate buying a new home for she and David in Storybrooke, but regardless of the current state of the Enchanted Forest, David feels that it would be best to travel back and fight for what’s theirs. Still, she insists on her plans, stating that she is ‘tired of fighting’ and simply wants to settle down. She is also secretly worried about what might become of Emma if they leave Storybrooke.
Of course, things don’t stay normal in Storybrooke for long. A stranger crashes his car across the Storybrooke line and is badly injured, which inevitably causes much confusion and chaos. After the initial confusion, the stranger is treated and stabilized. That evening after everything settles down, the Charmings head back to their apartment. They grab some late night snacks and talk amongst each other, only to be interrupted by Mr. Gold who comes to ask Emma to go to New York with him, ultimately fulfilling a favor that she owes him.
Now, Mary Margaret and David are left in Storybrooke to deal with more obstacles, one being a giant that wreaks havoc in Storybrooke for a time, believing that David wronged him in the past (when in reality, the giant had mistaken David for his twin brother, James.) After the misunderstanding is straightened out with the giant, he actually befriends the residents of Storybrooke, eventually teaming up to help them in their quest to get back to the Enchanted Forest. Anton (the giant) inspects the soil content of the town, telling them that he thinks it might be viable for growing magic beans. He is hesitant because he knows Cora brought him to Storybrooke for this purpose, but Mary Margaret reassures him that they will not let her get to them, and so he begins to plant the magic beans. With another problem solved, Mary Margaret and David again discuss going back to the Enchanted Forest now that they have a way to grow the beans. Mary Margaret does not want to leave Emma in one world while she is in another. David assures her that Emma and Henry have each other and will always be safe, but she is still unsure about the whole thing.
Soon, David and Mary Margaret get a phone call from New York and find out that, to their surprise, Rumplestiltskin’s son is actually Henry’s father. Mary Margaret talks to Emma about this over the phone, advising her that it would be best to be honest with Henry about the whole thing- come clean. She even makes the point to Emma that her keeping information from Henry about his biological father may have more to do with her own feelings than it does with Henry.
When the day of Mary Margaret’s birthday arrives, she is less than thrilled about it. David makes her pancakes and generally tries to make the day better for her, as she’s clearly not looking forward to it. She soon finds a package that she scolds David for buying her, but he had nothing to do with the gift. Curious, she opens the present and finds a tiara that her mother had given her as a child. The card says that it is from Johanna, a childhood friend and friend of her Royal Family back in the Enchanted Forest. Overwhelmed, she leaves David with a kiss and sets out to find Johanna. Once the two meet up, they embrace, proceeding to reminisce and just catch up for a while. Mary Margaret hears a noise in the woods, and leaves Johanna for a moment to investigate. To her horror, she finds Cora and Regina in the woods- working together in an attempt to find Rumplestiltskin’s dagger.
Mary Margaret and David work diligently in an attempt to get to the dagger before it falls into the hands of Regina and her mother. Thanks to a phone call from Emma and Gold, they find it, but Cora and Regina show up soon after. The two bring in Johanna, proposing an exchange- the dagger for Johanna’s life. Mary Margaret falls to her knees with the dagger, surrendering it, but Cora fails to hold up her end of the deal. She thoughtlessly throws Johanna off of the clocks tower to her death. She and Regina leave in a cloud of smoke, and Mary Margaret is left paralyzed in David’s arms.
After this tragedy, Mary Margaret is at a loss. She and David visit Johanna’s grave, and Mary Margaret tells him that all her life she has been good, but only lost the lives of the ones she loves. Much to David's dismay, she reveals to him that she will kill Cora in order to protect her family. The subject comes up again a few days later, and David argues that she will not be able to live with herself if she takes this path. Despite it all, Mary Margaret plots to kill Cora with a magic candle. (In order to kill the person, you must light the candle over their body, and whisper their name.) This process kills one and saves the life of another. Rumplestiltskin (who is very injured and back in Storybrooke at the time) tells her that a heart would work as well, since she doesn’t have access to Cora’s body and Cora’s heart was magically removed from her body for safekeeping. She finds and curses the heart, and does something that will ultimately cause her endless grief. Telling Regina that it is impossible for Cora to love her if she does not have a heart, she offers Regina the heart to put back into place. But with the heart cursed, Cora dies almost immediately after Regina unknowingly does so. Upon realizing what has occurred, Regina vows revenge against Mary Margaret.
The days following Cora’s death are absolutely miserable for Snow. She lays in bed for days- depressed. David does all that he can to comfort her, bringing her breakfast in bed and being as supportive as possible. Despite this, her guilt ruthlessly eats away at her until she can no longer bear it.
She confronts Regina directly at her home, begging to be killed- believing that their conflicts must end before it costs anyone else his life. Regina swiftly rips out her heart, revealing to Mary Margaret the black spot that is beginning to form due to the darkness that she has let in. Knowing that this darkness will only grow with time and ultimately lead to the destruction of her happy family, Regina thrusts the heart back into place.
Fast forwarding a bit after a few more depressed days, Mary Margaret finds August in the forest- completely wooden. He believes that there’s just no way for him to come back from his mistakes, but Mary Margaret encourages him otherwise. Eventually, he is actually turned back into a real boy (seven-years old again). Later, Mary Margaret tells David of her visit with Regina, and he’s shocked and furious, because she put herself in danger. She doesn’t believe that she has any chance of redemption, or that there is any way to stop her heart from blackening further, but David encourages her…using August as an example. He knows that, because of the goodness in her heart, they will find another way.
Some time passes, and the group goes to check on the beans, only to find them destroyed. They believe that Regina is responsible, and seek Rumplestiltskin’s help to find her. Because of his debt to Mary Margaret, he gives her a solution made with Regina’s tears that will allow her to see what Regina sees and feel what she feels long enough for them to get the information that they need. Upon using the eyedrops, Mary Margaret experiences excruciating pain, and smells an odd odor, which ultimately leads them to find Greg in the act of attempting to electrocute Regina to death. After Regina is brought back to their apartment and healed, the group is shocked to find out that Regina had previously had plans to use a trigger to erase Storybrooke and everyone in it, leaving only herself and Henry alive. But now, the trigger was in the hands of Tamara (Henry’s father’s fiancé) and Greg (the stranger that had crashed into Storybrooke weeks before).
Tamara and Greg end up activating the trigger in the mine, which immediately begins to take affect. They leave, and when Regina and Emma arrive, Regina absorbs some of its power, but says that she can only hold it off for so long. When Emma leaves Regina to go let Mary Margaret and David know what’s going on, Mary Margaret suggests a different approach. Since they had recovered one of the magic beans from Greg and Tamara during a struggle, they would use is to send the trigger through a portal and out of Storybrooke. Eventually, Emma agrees and they all head down to the mine, but to their dismay, the bean is actually not in the pouch where it belonged. Emma joins Regina in absorbing the trigger’s power, and it is contained- saving the town.
All is well until she notices that Henry is missing. Tamara and Greg had kidnapped him! The group chases them out, but Tamara uses the last bean and she and Greg take Henry through a portal with them. Just when all seems lost, Hook returns on his ship, telling them that he’s had a change of heart and is now interested in helping them get Henry back. Mr. Gold also joins in the search, using his magic globe to point the ship in the direction of Neverland. Hook throws the bean and they all hold on tight as they enter the portal.
Abilities/Special Powers: Snow has no known magical powers, but she is adept bow hunter. She is a very precise shot- not likely to miss her target. (Once, in the process of potentially saving Emma’s life, she killed an ogre with one shot to the eye having not touched a bow in twenty-eight years.) She also possesses survival skills, stemming from the fact that she lived alone in the woods with Red for quite some time. In addition, she can communicate with birds. (As seen in 2x8 “Into the Deep” when Cora sends a crow to find Snow and relay a message to her and Emma.)
Third-Person Sample:
Her thoughts raced as the ship rocked. After being separated from Charming for so many consecutive days upon making the decision to jump through that portal after Emma those months ago, she was more than a bit leery of the prospect of risking getting separated a second time. She didn’t regret it in the slightest, but she certainly didn’t want it to happen again. Although… if it was for Henry -for family- it was a risk that she would be willing to take, regardless of the circumstances or of her personal inhibitions.
She threw her arms around David’s waist, holding on tight as she felt the boat lurch violently, whirling closer and closer to the portal as the seconds passed- seconds that felt much more like minutes.
And then-
They had reached their destination. Or so she thought. She caught her breath and began to speak, but as her eyes darted from one end of the property to the other, she realized that she was alone. Where were David and Emma? Hook and Gold? Where was she?
First-Person Sample:
[Upon her arrival at the edge of the gardens on the seaward side, Mary Margaret raises up on her hands…sucking in a deep breath after dispelling the sea water that she must have taken in during their rough journey through the portal. She sighs, her heart beating rapidly-
They’ve made it.…but this place certainly doesn’t look like the Neverland that she had envisioned…
Then, genuine fear sets in, for she realizes that she is alone. She hurriedly surveys the area for another moment, quickly determining that this is, in fact, any place but their original destination. The last thing that she can remember is being on Hook’s ship, arms fastened around David’s waist as the portal drew them nearer.
Now, she’s here. Here in this strange place with none of her shipmates in sight. She doesn’t see anyone walking about the immediate area, but quickly notices what seems to be a communication device lying upright in the grass nearby. She scrambles for it, somehow managing to turn on the video function.
...Or perhaps.. it has been on all along?
Regardless, she speaks- mumbling to herself at first.]
What is this place? [Her voice slightly quavers.] David? Emma…Are you here? Are you alright?
[If they were, in fact, here with her… that would be one weight lifted off of her shoulders. The next- would be to find Henry.]
